Marsh & Co. support Hope Against Cancer at Leicester luncheon event

Hope Against Cancer Leicester luncheon

Leicester based insurance brokers Marsh & Co. continued their support for local charity Hope Against Cancer last week with the sponsorship of a luncheon held on April 1st by the organisation.

The event, attended by representatives of a range of other local businesses, took place at College Court Conference Centre, Knighton Road, and helped raise awareness of Hope Against Cancer within the local business community.

Hope Against Cancer is Leicestershire and Rutland’s local cancer research charity, established in 2003 to bring cutting edge research to the area and to make clinical trials available to local people. Since then, the organisation has raised £3m and funded over 30 research projects tackling many different forms of cancer. Additionally, it has been instrumental in the City of Leicester becoming a cancer research centre of excellence, one of only around 15 in the UK.

“As a business we were looking to support and work with a local charity as part of our corporate social responsibility,” explained Marsh & Co. Group Managing Director Rob Marsh. “I was introduced recently to a local charity – Hope Against Cancer. I have to say the discussions really struck a chord with me; this was exactly what we were looking for as a business. Subsequently a meeting was arranged with the team at their offices and certainly any support we were able to offer – small or large – was welcome.”

“We discussed that whilst we were a local family established business and considered ourselves part of the community, we felt that we were not necessarily ‘ENGAGING’ and supporting the local community as we wanted to.”

“Like many businesses here today over the years we have supported various worthy charities on an ad hoc basis, however not necessarily with the reassurance those contributions would support local charities here in Leicester. This is why we knew that supporting Hope was the right corporate fit for our business.”

“Every penny raised by Hope Against Cancer is spent locally and directly here in Leicester. They receive no funding from the Government and are therefore totally dependent on voluntary donations. To raise over 3 Million in just over 10 years along of course with the recent opening of the Clinical Trials Unit is remarkable.”

“This is why Marsh & Company were delighted to nominate ‘Hope Against Cancer’ as our chosen charity and we look forward to building a partnership with them well into the future.”

“This also provides our business the opportunity to now engage with the community. Corporate social responsibility is frequently mentioned in the media (and here today), personally I do agree that companies do have a responsibility to be a good citizen and supporting charities is one way to make a positive difference to our communities.”

“Customers are becoming more aware of the environment and social implications of their purchasing and businesses are always striving to make themselves stand out in a crowded market place.”

“We believe to form a ‘partnership’ with a local charity could ‘evolve’ far beyond purely fund raising into a long term relationship where both parties truly benefit, particularly one who is striving so hard to find better treatments and better outcomes in the local and national fight against cancer.”

“Whilst Hope is a Leicester charity with it being instrumental in the City of Leicester becoming a Cancer Research Centre of Excellence, one of only 15 in the UK, this has a positive impact on cancer treatment across the whole of the UK.”

Speaking on behalf of Hope Against Cancer, the organisation’s Chief Executive Nigel Rose said: “We are extremely grateful to Marsh & Co. who have shown real vision in their willingness to support a local charity in helping us in ways that can make a difference to the charity and what we are trying to achieve. In generously sponsoring our recent business lunch, they have really helped us get our messages across to the business community and raised awareness of Hope’s important role in needing to raise funds for research as part of a national cancer research centre of excellence for the next three years. We envisage our relationship as long-term and I am positive that it will go from strength to strength.”

Marsh & Co.’s extensive insurance service covers shops, offices, private property, business property and liability, motor fleet, directors and officers liability and travel, and the company has access to all forms of risk management/health and safety advice. It also offers schemes for all types of businesses such as hotels, restaurants, care and residential homes, the motor trade, the construction industry, sports clubs and venues (including Leicester City FC) and more.
